Graviola Soursop Fruit

Graviola, which is widely also known as soursop, grows on a small evergreen tree. It is also referred to by its Spanish name, Guanabana. The tree produces the edible, heart-shaped, prickly Graviola fruit.

What is Graviola Fruit

The outer skin is yellow-green, and the inside is white with black seeds. The Graviola fruit tastes like a mix of strawberry, pineapple, and sour citrus, and has a creamy flavor similar to a coconut or banana.

The Graviola fruit has become famous in recent years for containing a group of alleged anti-cancer agents found in it, called acetogenins.

Benefits of Graviola (Soursop)

Cancer Treatment

The Graviola fruit’s most known and debated benefit is his apparent capacity to fight cancer. Graviola has 82 different acetogenin chemicals (in 10 distinct types) which offer an important support to chemotherapy. In 1997, a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry stated that the acetogenins in the Graviola fruit are 200 times more effective than Adriamycin (a chemotherapy drug) and have significant effects in healing colon cancer and killing breast cancer cells.

Subsequent studies have shown Graviola fruit to be effective in fighting against nine types of cancers: ovarian, colon, breast, prostate, lung, liver, cervical, lymphoma, and pancreatic cancers. In the case of pancreatic cancer, Graviola fruit was also shown to inhibit the growth of tumors, as well as altering pancreatic tumor cell metabolism (as described by a study from the University of Nebraska). More so, Graviola does not affect healthy cells in fighting against cancer.
